◎ Background/History: http://voltron.wikia.com/wiki/Shiro
◎ Personality: Still waters run deep is an excellent nutshell for Shiro. Your classic stoic, he doesn't tend to say very much more than he needs to, but you couldn't have a more stalwart friend at your side. Loyal and compassionate, he's the sort of person who'd give or sacrifice anything to help people or protect his friends, whether it's dedicating his life to becoming the leader of the paladins, or giving his own arm in the Gladiator pits so one scared kid wouldn't have to fight. While he's more quiet than his more often than not boisterous companions, he's more than willing to lend a compassionate ear to confide in, and is more than happy to keep his friend's closer secrets guarded for as long as the need him to. He's also not without a sense of humor, and isn't above occasionally joining in on the sillier excesses of his cohorts (pew pew laser sounds, anyone?), but these moments are further between than not.
More often than not, he's seen as the voice of reason- the moderate on the team, who acts only after hearing all possible options and is always able to maintain a clear and level head. Above all, he's calm and confident no matter what the situation, and is generally very good at keeping his head under pressure, even when facing improbable odds. While he generally will err on the side of rationality and logic, he's not above making decisions with his heart or his gut when it comes to those around him- rushing headlong into the heart of the Galra forces to rescue Allura, even while knowing the odds of such a mission were all but impossible. While it takes some time for them to all come together, in the end he trusts his team to always come through and pull off whatever it is the need to do. He's not someone who sees failure as an option.
While his abilities and exploits are essentially legendary- known on earth as one of the Galaxy Garrison's best pilots (a personal hero to some of the newer cadets even after his disappearance was brushed under the rug with falsified reports of his own pilot error), and even among the Galra as 'The Champion' for his combat exploits in the aforementioned gladiatorial pits, he never develops a big head or any sort of oversized ego about himself. He's just doing what needs to be done, with everything he's got to offer. He's more likely to admire the abilities and dedication of those around him than he is to dwell on his own successes.
That isn't to say everything about him is positive. His time spent as a captive of the Galra took its toll, and he bears it's scars, both physically and mentally. He suffers from occasional traumatic flashbacks, and has experienced a significant amount of traumatic amnesia, blocking out much of his experiences while being held prisoner. While these memories often prove useful at times, they're no less painful. He says little about these experiences, admitting only to having his head 'still pretty messed up'. His problems aren't meant to burden his team-mates. Even his own body is a source of painful memory and disgust- his arm was replaced with tech from the Galra, in the form of a weaponized prosthesis. While he largely accepts it as a part of his body, when prodded on what it means- making him more than (or less than) completely human, it was enough to cause him to snap, losing his cool and jettisoning an enemy directly into space- an act far more cold-blooded than he'd ever be otherwise capable of.
All told, he's the leader his team needs, if not the proverbial 'father to his men', he's at least a really solid, reliable big brother.
◎ Powers/Abilities: While he wouldn't possess any supernatural abilities or superpowers on his own, his natural combat reflexes, physical training, and quick thinking made him the champion of the Galra gladiator pits, and his skill in his Black Lion are without question- that is, without his arm in the equation. Produced with the best Galra technology has to offer, his prosthetic right arm is a built in weapon that allows him to fight on par with creatures much, much stronger than an average human. Unlike his fellow paladins, he needs no external weapon- he's become his own. Forged through a mixture of scientific and supernatural power, the full capabilities of this arm are not entirely known, even to himself, but it is known at very least to function as a heat weapon capable of generating and blocking energy attacks. To say he's got a mean right hook is a bit of an understatement.

The ViViD program source code fires into life all around, resolving raw data into a more and more recognizable pattern. Supposedly, these programs were somehow able to read their user's memories, their deepest thoughts, and make them 'real'. Frankly, the idea was nothing short of terrifying, but Shiro needed answers. He needed to remember everything it was he'd forgotten- to piece together the fragments in his head. According to what he'd been told here, the universe- every universe- all of it was over. That would mean he and his team had failed. Somehow, all of it had failed. He wasn't about to just accept that. There had to be something in his head- something he could use, some sort of answer. They had once tried to extract information from an unwilling prisoner, and it had led to complete disaster. This time would be different- it was his own head, his own memories.
...or maybe not. What he materialized- it wasn't just his memories. It was all of his nightmares. That otherworldly light. The gladiatorial pit. It was the worst moments of his confinement at the hands of the Galra- what had he really expected? And there he stood, back in the center of it all. Of course that's what it would be. Isn't that why he was really here? To face exactly this? Fine. He wouldn't run, and he wouldn't hide. Whoever they- whoever his own mind sent him to face, he'd take it on. He'd take back his own mind, and his own memories, with his own hands- -Hand. His real hand. It had taken him a moment to realize. Human. Not the Galra prosthesis, here in ViViD he was his real self again. His heart almost skipped a couple of beats. Was that what he was supposed to find here?
Thud. The ground shook, and there was a tremendous cloud of dust that took away his vision and seared the inside of his nose and mouth as he inhaled. Somewhere in the haze, a huge form appeared. Of course, it was a gladiatorial arena, there would be an opponent. A Galra monster? Sendak? Zarkon himself? Whatever it was, he'd take them on, even without a single weapon to his name.
He wasn't prepared in the slightest. His eyes widened as the dust cleared... and he stood before himself. Sort of. A hideous fusion of human and Galra tech, barely recognizable as either, malformed, with both his arms and limbs replaced completely with alien weaponry, eyes glowing the same hideous ethereal purple as a Galra crystal.
“No... It can't be!” He shouted into the void.
“Oh, but it is.” His double cocked it's head, smirking with what was left of it's human mouth. “You know what Sendak said. We're not really human anymore. We could be so much more than that, if you would only embrace it.”
“I'll never, ever become you!” Now he was running at the abomination, determined to strike the first blow. That... that thing couldn't be allowed to exist. The thing seemed more amused than anything, as he reeled back his arm for the strongest punch he could muster- a punch that flew through absolutely nothing. Raw data. The scenario fizzled out of existence, and Shiro was left in his room, soaked in sweat, staring at two trembling hands- one human, and one not.
